Why does the middle and upper east coast not have problems like others?

I live in VA, around the mid east coast, if you look at other areas, Midwest is always having tornado problems, in the south their are always hurricanes, Florida gets it with one about every year, In the west like California their are always earthquakes, and in the north its always cold, around where I live we almost never have any problems,Aside form the hurricane over the summer but that rarely happens.

Chosen Answer:

Virginia just happens to be in a lucky, comfortable spot. There are no major fault lines (that we know about!), mountains keep tornadoes from forming, the cool water keeps hurricanes away…

The area isn’t prone to anything really harsh. There are problems from time to time, like wind storms.

Wind storms: Sometimes you get strong winds. Virginia’s had a few tornadoes, but this is not Kansas. You won’t see cows flying around in the air or anything dramatic like that. Still, there have been a few storms that have caused a bit of damage. Trees falling over, and such. This is probably your greatest problem.

Floods: After wind storms, I’d say flooding is the next biggest threat. The winter storms in the WV mountains sometimes means the Potomac will flood in the spring. As a result, they don’t allow buildings right along the river. The exception is Old Town Alexandria which was built in the colonial era, before people thought about such things. Old Town is about the only area that really has a problem with flooding. By the way, this also means we have beautiful parkland all along the rivers.

Snow: We usually get a few inches of snow in the winter. Some winters we get no snow at all. This past winter we had a record breaking blizzard. That was very rare, but it happens.

Earthquakes: Not a problem here.

Quicksand: Not a problem here.

Hurricanes: Sometimes the last little bit of a hurricane will blow through. Isabel came through 5-6 years ago. By the time it came through it was barely strong enough to be called a hurricane. However, it did cause some minor damage.

Fires: I can’t recall any big fires here, but there probably have been some. I don’t think this is a big problem here. Not like what you have in the west.

Mudslides: Not a problem here.

Lightning: We don’t get the frequent dramatic storms like they have in Florida, but we do get thunder and lightning here.

Acid Rain: You’ll see some evidence of acid rain in the western parts of the blue ridge. I haven’t seen any of it east of the mountains, however.

Smog: Our air quality is pretty good compared to most other cities in the US. We don’t have any mountains close enough to cause “brown clouds.” We get a fair amount of windy days and rainy days, which keeps the air pretty clean.

Tsunami: hasn’t happened yet.

Flying Cows: You only see those in the movie Twister.
